Sampheap Restaurant***
|
| This spacious but local restaurant, located across the Siem Reap river from the Royal Residence on the east river road, is very interesting in that although it has an English menu, its customers are almost 100 per cent Cambodians and Asian tourists. They offer a large menu where you can find mostly Cambodian dishes. Although most dishes are $5 or more, the quantity is quite large. For example, a dish of fried squid and vegetables in a spicy sauce is $5.50 including rice, it has so much more squid than a similar dish at Shadow of Angkor that is $3.50. As this example illustrates, this restaurant would be a very good place if you had a large number of people and share lots of dishes together. In such a case, be sure to order one or two dishes less than the number in the party. All in all, the dishes are quite tasty although they are not outstanding, but are true to the traditional taste of Khmer food. The only complaint we can make is that a large bottle of Angkor beer is $3.00, a bit too high. Considering the location and the ordinary atmosphere of the restaurant, $2.00 is more like it.
